LIFE-2-ACID

AIDIMME – Metalworking, Furniture, Wood, Packaging and Related Technological Institute – is still developing the LIFE-2-ACID project with a prototype development and demonstration focused on Zinc and Iron recovery in exhausted pickling baths from the galvanic industry.

The pilot is based on the selective extraction through membrane technology and electrodeposition in electrolytic cells. After the built prototype implementation, the Zinc extraction and retrieval trials were carried out – the image shows the state of the electrode before and after the metal deposition.

After the physicochemical characterisation of the samples, the aim is to demonstrate the viability in reusing the recovered materials – metallic Zinc in the galvanic process and iron chloride as a coagulant in the wastewater treatment.

By doing so, the environmental impacts derived from this sector falls: sludge residue is reduced up to a 90% and environmental indicators such as global warming potential are reduced a 50%. Different organisations participate in this project: AIAS (association of surface refinement industries), GALESA (Valencian galvanizer), MARE (EDAR), the University of Cantabria, the Universitat Politècnica de València, and AIDIMME, coordinated by APRIA SYSTEMS.
