AIDIMME Works on the LIFE WASTE2COAG Project: A Technological, Innovative and Cost-effective Solution for the Valorisation of Metal Wastes and Brines
AIDIMME works in LIFE WASTE2COAG project: a technological, innovative and cost-effective solution for the valorisation of metal wastes and brines, sustainably producing coagulants that can be used in urban and industrial wastewater treatment plants
On December 13, the kick-off meeting of the Life WASTE2COAG LIFE20 ENV/ES/000430 was held. This project officially started last October and will last until July 2024.
In the meeting, all the project partners were welcomed and they presented their entities. This was followed by an overview of the project and each action that will take place as part of the project.
The general objective of the project is the demonstration of an innovative and cost-efficient technology based on the electrolysis of wastes in order to produce coagulants for the removal of pollutants in wastewaters, including emerging pollutants and pathogens. The concentration of coagulant, as well as the chemical nature of the inorganic salt, will be modified on demand with a simple polarity inversion to obtain different product formulations. These products will be applied to secure high-quality effluents in urban and industrial WWTPs.
Industrial scrap metallic wastes and brines generated in different industries, including WWTPs and DPs will be valorised. Thus, the project boosts the circular economy in water treatment plants and creates synergies with other sectors. Electrolysis will be performed under conditions of maximum efficiency, using renewable energy, due to the exploitation of high conductivity wastes, enhancing sustainability.
To facilitate the rapid uptake of the technological solution by the market, exploitation and business strategy will be prepared in order to contribute to the shift towards a circular economy model. This project will test the transferability of the solution among Spanish and Dutch WWTPs and the possibility of implantation into industrial sewage plants. The LIFE Waste2Coag technology will be proposed -based on the obtained results during the actions of the project- as the best available technology in the EU Best Available Techniques reference documents (BREFs).
The project, coordinated by Global Omnium in Spain, comprises a multidisciplinary and international consortium, formed by 5 partners located in Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium: GOMLS, AIDIMME, AQUAFIN, ISLE and JOVIAR CREATIONS.
